Many people use alcohol in a positive way for celebration and social occasions BUT significant proportion of people also lean on drinking as a form of “self-medication” to cope with unpleasant emotions and stress.
In light of this, who better to speak with than world-renowned expert on alcohol and it’s harms, Professor David Nutt who has spent 40 years studying alcohol and and authored a book called “Drink? The New Science of Alcohol + Your Health” which explores the science of alcohol, it’s detrimental effects on one’s health and the effects on wider society.
Professor Nutt has had a an illustrious career as a neuropsychopharmacologist specialising in the research of drugs that affect the brain and conditions such as addiction, anxiety, and sleep.
He’s worked as an advisor to the Ministry of Defence, Department of Health, and the Home Office and is also the chairman of Drug Science, a non-profit organisation which he founded in 2010 to provide independent, evidence-based information on drugs.
He is currently the director of the Neuropsychopharmacology Unit in the Division of Brain Sciences at Imperial College London. Prof Nutt was a member of the Committee on Safety of Medicines, and was President of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology.
